Moreno Valley wildlife control Tip of the Month:

A Description of the Life and Look of the Evening Bat
There are very few critters in the animal world that are smaller than that of the evening bat. This animal ways less thana quarter of an ounce. It not only has a minimal amount of weight, but its size makes it nearly impossible to see in less you are looking for the animal. Very small, which is a huge advantage to the bat.

Where Do You Find the Bat?
The evening bat is found throughout the Midwest and in many Eastern states in the country. It is also frequently found in northeastern Mexico. This animal is most often found in the Gulf Coast states where colonies live in very small numbers, usually no more than a few dozen. A typical colony has about 100 members, with the largest known colony reaching about a thousand. Most often these large colonies die out because of an insufficient amount of food. These animals will roost in trees during the summer, sleeping peacefully while it is light outside. The foliage of the trees helps to shield them from potential predators, who have a difficult time distinguishing the bat from leaves. In this way, their small size is of great advantage to them. While often found in trees, it is not surprising to find these bats in the attic or walls of a home. Because of how small they are in the fact that they live in small colonies, it is easy for them to hide in a person's home. In fact, because of the very small size of this critter, they are easily able to work their way through a crack or loose board and into your home. It was believed for quite some time that these were migratory animals, but that no longer appears to be the case. They will remain in an area until it warms, coming out of hibernation to begin feeding and conducting normal daily activities.

What Do They Eat?
The evening bat is an insectivore, meaning these animals eat insects as their primary diet. The bat primarily eats such things as moths, wasps, and beetles. It prefers insects that are more meaty, which many scientists find quite surprising considering how small these creatures are. They have very sharp teeth that are quite strong. This enables them to work through the exoskeleton of insects such as beetles.

The Life Cycle of the Bat
Despite an extensive amount of research, the reproductive cycle of the evening bat is not well known. Scientists have discovered that mating occurs during the fall, but the egg of this animal is not fertilized at first. The sperm is stored by the female, sometimes for months. This is usually stored all through the winter and into the spring, when the sperm is then transferred to the egg for fertilization to occur. The young are then born in June. It is quite common for twins to be born. These animals are able to forage for themselves within a few weeks of the birth. This makes them autonomous at a very young age.
